Hey Guys! The City of Chicago officially turns 178 years old today! Woohoo! Back on March 4, 1837 the frontier village of Chicago was incorporated as a city. Despite having just 200 residents 4 years earlier, the city would see the population boom to 4,000 by 1840. Over the next several decades, industry and the railroads would converge to make Chicago one of the most important cities in the country. The fire of 1871 burned hotter than the flames of hell but could not burn up the city's ambition(in one particular way the fire actually helped, wiping away the downtown area to allow planners to start fresh with an actual plan in mind). The city didn't just recover from the fire, it came back stronger than ever, welcoming the world to its doorstep(and the Holmes Hotel) in 1893. The 20th Century saw some struggles with the decline in both railroads and industry, but the city weathered those storms, and is now a place where you can see cars, go on runs, take in a baseball game, and even see a world-acclaimed music festival. As Chicago enters Year 179, the future looks nothing but bright. Here's to you, Chicago!
